# Smarter Workplaces Start with Smarter Data

During our panel at NexusCon 2024, James Wu, InnerSpace CEO, shared the stage with other industry leaders to discuss one of the most urgent challenges in corporate real estate today: *How can organizations use data to make smarter decisions about their workplace?*

James and Kevin focused on the fundamentals of space utilization by defining the key terms and focused on how the industry has fundamentally changed in the last five years, requiring a new approach to understanding how our spaces are used. 

As hybrid work continues to evolve, companies are trying to find the right size for their portfolios, reduce operating costs, and still deliver engaging workplace experiences. In this panel, James, alongside [Kevin Sauer](https://www.linkedin.com/in/kevinsauer/) of [Sauer Strategy Work](https://www.sauerstrat.com/)s, shared real-world examples of how data is helping teams rise to the challenge by moving beyond badge swipes and static occupancy counts to a full understanding of how space supports people.

While many organizations track who’s in the building, the real value comes from understanding how space is being used, how long employees stay, which areas are avoided, and what types of spaces best support different ways of working.

Bringing people back to the office isn’t just about getting them through the door. It’s about how they engage, collaborate, and feel in those spaces. The best way to understand that is by using the right data, the kind that gives a complete view of behavior and patterns.

During this session, James explored the value of utilization analytics and how deeper movement data supports decision-making across HR, IT, facilities, and real estate. These insights help organizations improve not just square footage planning, but overall performance.

Throughout the session, attendees joined breakout discussions centred on one key question: How can we better integrate data, analytics, and real-time insights into every workplace decision?
